Vancouver is a major city in western Canada, located in the Lower Continent region of British Columbia. As the most populous city in the province, the 2016 census recorded 631,486 people in the city, up from 603,502 in 2011.
Goal of the Greenest city
Greenest City is a bold initiative to address Vancouver’s environmental challenges. While the city lives in what is widely recognized as one of the most livable cities in the world, the environmental footprint in 2019 was reported three times larger than what the Earth can sustain.
As the city says, “The decisions we make every day about how we move around the city, what we buy and how we treat our waste mean that we currently use much more than our share of the Earth’s resources.
The city has what it takes to successfully source 100% of our energy from renewable sources by 2050.
The report also says, “We already have the lowest per capita greenhouse gas emissions of any major city in North America.”
We are financially strong and diverse.
We are a city that innovates and already has abundant clean electricity ”.
Action plan
The Greener City Action Plan is a strategy to stay at the forefront of urban sustainability.
The Action Plan is divided into 10 goal areas that address three general focus areas:
- Zero carbon
- Zero waste
- Healthy ecosystems
Zero Waste 2040 is a long-term strategic vision for Vancouver to achieve the goal of zero waste by 2040.
It will help guide future decisions and investments related to solid waste and provides a framework to continue the work and success of current zero waste policies and programs.
The plan includes forward-looking policies and actions to help stimulate, support and enable Vancouver to become a zero waste community. Some of these actions can be implemented immediately, while others will lay the groundwork for progress over time.
